Library 2.0

It's been awhile since I posted - May 29th being the last time. But I got busy which is why my first post is titled the way it is.

North Texas 23 item number 2 is to read/watch and review/respond to a couple of blogs and videos about Library 2.0. I chose the article "11 reasons why Library 2.0 exists and matters." I think this is a great article if it is read by the right people - Public Library administrators and/or city management. In most cases, the public service librarian does not have a problem with 2.0. They have a problem with having to know and learn all of these applications on their own time and at home (when we are supposed to be relaxing). I've joined the so-called 2.0 apps that I want to join; will discover the 2.0 apps that fit into my lifestyle; and ignore the rest. But when administrators think I am not viable or productive because I don't tweet, that is where the problem lies.

I disagree with blyberg.net's #6 - L2 challenges library orthodoxy on almost every level. He makes his argument as if this is the only time library orthodoxy is challenged. Does anyone remember the switch from records to cassettes to compact discs? The introduction of videos and then the switch from beta to VHS to DVD? Libraries in general are often on the "forefront" and "just behind the times" all in the same moment. When you have to deal with customers that range from Bill Gates to Madea, it's difficult to fully serve both.

I like the comment, to blyberg.net's article, by Steve (posted 2.11.06) "It isn't having those tools that makes the difference, it is creating a library where those tools can be appreciated; that will get the job done; and using the right ones in the right places. Sometimes the best tool in the box is a package of soft skills."

I liked the following link, and can't wait till retirement so I can have time for my media life.

Web 2.0 23 things

In an effort to evolve and keep up with society, I am participating in the North Texas 23. This is a self paced learning tool to sample and experience many of the things that you can do on the web, which we call Web 2.0.

As the name of my blog suggests, I wonder if we really have time for all of this? With the constant demands of life in general, how much time is there for facebook, blogging, wikis, comments to others posts, email and so on? When do we have time for the spirit?

You might argue that keeping up with my friend from 2nd grade (40 years later) is spiritually rewarding. But I think that it is simply an attachment.

Is there an emoticon for 2 cents?
